Some History On Oriental Carpets.

The term means carpets from the East, but it's usually applied to hand-knotted rugs, 'oriental carpets' simply the wide area stretching from the Balkans in south-east Europe, over Turkey (Anatolia), North Africa, the Caucasus, Iran (formerly Persia), Afghanistan and China. It's hard to say exactly where a rug was made, or precisely how old it is. Tribes migrated or intermarried, and copied one another's traditional pattern.

It should be appreciated that oriental carpets are not just articles for use, but often works of art on high plane, fascinating in their richness of design, their symbolism, their imagination and their delight in color. Oriental rugs have become as much a necessity in our beautiful, artistic homes as are the paintings on the walls and the various other works of art. Their admirers are rapidly increasing, and with this increased demand for more reliable information regarding them.

Since the end of the nineteenth century many patterns have been woven to order, in places far from their original source, to satisfy the western market. Oriental rugs are popularly described as 'Genuine' carpets though the term is hardly applicable since there are no "imitation" rugs. But 'genuine' suggests that these carpets are hand-made and therefore individual. When a genuine oriental rug is purchased, proper maintenance will allow them to be enjoyed through the generations.
